We all know that the American healthcare system is broken. People avoid going to the hospital because they are terrified of the medical bills. America spends almost twice as much money as other high income countries, but gets worse health outcomes. That’s like paying a designer shoe price for those Payless “Adidas” with the four stripes. I mean you know you are getting shit but you still cough up the $500. The worst part of it all is that not only is the American government coughing up Gucci money for four stripped “Adidas”, but you the American citizen are also paying top dollar for that knock-off shoe. The catch is that no one ever tells you the price of the shoe until you are checking out and once you are checking out you cannot return the shoe to the shelf. No, you must pay for it and you usually can’t afford it. Also, in most cases the sales person will get you to buy other shoes that you don’t need, just so that they can make a commission.
I mean would you ever go to a store like that one? Of course not. Then why do we tolerate this with our healthcare system? I mean we literally have higher standards for where we buy clothes than where we are kept alive. And staying alive is much more important than clothes right? I mean you can pass on this year’s jumpsuit craze but you really can’t pass on that chemotherapy if you have cancer. And because getting health care is a necessity of living, we can’t let a healthcare system operate like a shitty store selling you things that you don’t need. So, what can I do, say you as you are digging for the Cheetos stuck between your couch cushions. Definitely try to call your congress person and tell them that you tired of paying for a jaguar only to end up driving around a clunker that you know will not get you more than 10 steps away from your garage. But they probably won’t listen because you know they get money from the people who want you to keep bleeding money. So what else can you do? Stop paying your medical bills. Just stop it. Sure, you’ll get a bunch of angry phone calls from debt collectors. But if we all stop paying our medical bills maybe the system will change.
