There has been a lot of backlash against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for being too progressive and idealistic to the point of delusional. She’s a proponent of the Green New Deal, which seeks to prevent climate change from turning our planet into Waterworld and to address the economic inequality that threatens to send us back to a world of peasants and lords (oh shit, we may already be there). Most of the backlash comes from both Democrats and Republicans who believe that the Green New Deal is too costly and they definitely don’t like her idea of bringing back a 70% tax rate for the very wealthy. This doesn’t mean that the very wealth will pay 70% on all their hard-earned (most likely inherited) dough – the tax rate is marginal. So, if the effective tax rate for over 10 million dollars is 70%, only the income over 10 million dollars will be taxed at 70%. Woah, that was a lot of math to explain.
Anyways, people are really angry about this because they don’t think it’s fair that rich people, who own 40 yachts, should be taxed more in order to save our planet or prevent people from starving. And the people who are angry are not just rich people, a lot of them are people who will never make one million dollars in their lifetime. These are the same people who love subsidizing Walmart, by forcing all of us to pay for Walmart’s workers’ food stamps instead of forcing Walmart to pay their workers a living wage. Why are these people so angry at tax hikes that will only benefit them? Because these lovely people have been tricked into believing that they too one day will be rich because, duh, the American dream.
Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news. The American Dream is absolute garbage. Yeah I said it. Social mobility in America is one of the lowest among other industrialized countries and income inequality today is almost as bad as it was in the 1920s (yes, before the great depression). So, no Nicole who works at Hobby Lobby, you are most likely not going to make 10 million dollars in your lifetime and neither will your children, and neither will your children’s children. I’m not trying to shit on your dreams, but I’m just trying to give you the real statistics. Of course, I could be wrong but I’m most likely not – again statistics. So, stop sticking up for the top 1% who refuse to pay you a living wage and start sticking up for yourself and your children. But if you insist on defending your bully, here are the tips to dress like someone who thinks they’ll be a millionaire one day when in reality statistics says otherwise.
Large sunglasses – so you can imagine enjoying the sun on one of the yachts you are never going to have.
Tons of gold-toned jewelry – pretend that it’s real gold ‘cause let’s face it, your job at Hobby Lobby can’t pay for real gold.
Acrylic sweater – imagine that it’s cashmere grazing your skin because, well, you’ll never have cashmere graze your skin.
Faux leopard heels – imagine you got them from an actual leopard you killed on safari. Because some rich people like to do dumb shit like kill innocent animals.
