I am a firm believer in at least one work uniform, not just because it drastically improves the morning rush but because it defines your style. Before I came up with my work uniforms, there would be days when my closet turned into a collection of unfamiliar objects whose sole purpose was to taunt me; as if not being a morning person is not traumatic enough. However, with my husband’s help I was able to develop a strategy to dress myself in the morning sans he drama; seriously my husband did help. A few weeks after defining my uniforms, I noticed that I had become more particular about which pieces I added to my wish list, and resisted sales with ease.
Cognizance of my aesthetic shaped my perspective on clothes; they were no longer just stand-alone acquisitions but pieces to a puzzle. If I saw something and absolutely adored it, I found myself challenging how that beautiful thing would fit and most of the time it didn’t. As a matter of fact, these days my closet’s composition includes a majority of basics and some accent pieces. Unsurprisingly the most utilized basic is my white button-front shirt which has been a staple for working women since the late 19th century. My favorite uniform pairs a white button-front shirt with a sleeveless dress. All you need is to layer your favorite sleeveless dress over your white button-front and voilà you’ve got a chic outfit. I’m in love with this look because it allows me to wear my summer dresses into fall and even winter without concealing their beauty under a blazer or cardigan.
The additional perk is that you probably already have a white button-front shirt and a sleeveless dress. Here’s how I put mine to good use.
